It is developed by reacting sodium carbonate and furnace-grade phosphoric acid to develop disodium phosphate that is then heated to 450 degree centigrade. It is composed of sodium ions and pyrophosphate anion. It is wieldy used as a buffering agent, a thickening agent, an emulsifier, a dispersing agent, etc. In addition to this, it is also used as a food additive. It is used as a palatability enhancer in varied foods such as pudding, crab meat, chicken nuggets, marshmallows, canned tuna, cat foods, etc. It is also used in toothpaste and dental floss as a tartar control agent to remove calcium and magnesium from saliva. It is also utilizes in commercial dental rinses to help in plaque reduction. Moreover, it is also used in household detergents for preventing similar deposition on clothing.
